The Effect of Cutting and Waterlogging on Plant-Related CO2 and N2O Fluxes Associated with the Invasive N-Fixing Species Gunnera tinctoria

The overall impact that plant invasions have on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by plant-mediated effects and how these interact with environmental management factors is largely unknown. To address this, we report the of leaf removal waterlogging, either singularly or in combination, fluxes CO2 N2O associated invasive species Gunnera tinctoria. Both leaves without flooding resulted higher due to reductions photosynthesis. Whilst waterlogging alone was also a reduction photosynthesis, this slower than effect removal. Significant were intact plants, which increased immediately after removal, seven days We found positive correlations between petiole rhizome areas, indicating size-dependent effect. Our results demonstrate plants G. tinctoria are source emissions, enhanced, albeit transiently, leaves. Consequently, interventions populations involve above-ground material, would not only reduce uptake, but further compromise ecosystem GHG balance through enhanced emissions.
